Mock Rock, the philanthropy of Alpha Chi Omega, takes place each fall in the month of October, Domestic Violence Awareness month.  Our philanthropy supports victims of domestic violence, with all proceeds benefiting the Women’s Resource Center of the New River Valley and the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation.  This Year 38 organizations participated in Mock Rock, raising over $17,000 in monetary donations and shelter items. Mock Rock is currently one of the largest philanthropies on the Virginia Tech campus.

Domestic violence includes any type of abuse (mental, physical, emotional, etc) committed between partners of a relationship.  A domestic violence act occurs at an estimated every 15 seconds somewhere in the United States.  Approximately 3 million women are abused by their husband or boyfriend each year, and every 21 days a woman loses her life to domestic violence.  If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, please contact the RAFT Crisis Hotline at (540) 961 - 8400.

Mock Rock 2009 featured three events: A Mock Band Competition, Wing Warrior, and the Mock Rock Lip Sync Competition Finale.

Mock Band Competition
We kicked off our philanthropy with a Mock Band competition on Monday October 26th at 7:30pm at Squires Colonial. Bands consisted of four members from each organization who performed one song from the RockBand video game. Overall game scores determined the winners, and extra points were awarded based on Originality and Performance. Attendance was encouraged and helped earn your team extra points!

Wing Warrior Contest
The second event, Wing Warrior, took place on the back deck of the Alpha Chi house in Oak Lane from 6-8pm. Each team nominated one member to be the wing eater, hopefully the Wing Warrior! They ate as many hot wings as they could in 3 minutes (wings must be completely eaten, no meat left)! Attendance earned extra points at Wing Warrior too!

Mock Rock Lip Sync Contest
Our third and final, main event was the Lip Sync Contest held in Burruss Auditorium. The event began promptly at 7pm. Teams received their performance time before the show but were asked to arrive at least forty-five minutes before their team performed. Points again were given for participation and attendance. Extra points were awarded for wearing Mock Rock t-shirts to the Lip Sync Competition. Aside from hosting the actual contest this night, Alpha Chi also set up luminaries for the Luminary Project. The Luminary Project, which was started four years ago, is a collection of candle-filled white bags that are arranged around the outside of Burruss Hall and lit at dusk. Each bag is personalized, reflecting the sponsoring organization’s name. The overall winners for the sororities, Sigma Kappa and fraternities, Delta Sigma Phi were announced.
